Dog chained to post can’t even rest head – then animal hero decides there’s only one thing to do

Guard dogs are common worldwide and often seem intimidating—that’s their role. But when people saw Cala, a guard dog in San Jose, Costa Rica, they felt sadness and pity, not fear.

Cala was kept at a car dealership, neglected by her owner who barely fed her and never took her to the vet. She became so weak she couldn’t stand, forced to sit with a short chain cutting into her neck, making it hard to breathe or rest her head.

Her condition worsened, and without help, she would have died.

Luckily, a neighbor noticed and contacted the police, who reached out to the animal shelter Territorio de Zaguates. Founder Lya Battle recalled feeling heartbroken at Cala’s state, describing her as a broken soul who had lost all dignity.

The police and shelter rescued Cala and took her to a vet, where she received treatment for her injuries, including severe wounds from the chain.
